The work of the German artist Angelika Jelich is complex and not immediately clear. Their work is however the painting attributable to it, however, by their smearing different media does not seem so obvious. Jelich used for example quite unusually the back of a deep one
wedge frame for collage painting and uses shapes as with shaped canvasses for her painting objects. Partially, she also renounces the canvas entirely and sketched plastic shapes in space, the outline and silouettes respectively.
The first work phase of Angelika Jelich is characterized by the model the landscape painting. She drives her search for more personal autonomy.
Through stays on Long Island at her to the USA emigrated son, her perception begins on the american everyday culture and the series begins the “gobelin paintings”. In addition, she invented the “Transparency” in the confronting the role of Robert Rauschenberg. Jelich found in the USA the photo film as an image carrier and combined it with collage photos and drawings on her “Transparencies” (photo film and collage).
The paint insert is mixed with gesso or also produced by foil floating color. This painting is motivated in a creative way abstract compositions, serial patterns with references on worlds of imagination and psychological constellations.
Recently, the first forms such as the shaped canvases have been created with pairs and forms, which also allows associations with the statue of liberty. These picture objects have a relation to the deceased artist Ree Morton. Jelich found herself in her working direction when she was referred to this artist. Like Morton she used banal motifs in lilac-colored spring colors as if to remain in the association, to the question of the freedom statue as a symbol of the western enlightened life presence. In spite of certain similarities, Jelich’s work has none direct feminist reference. Also the reference to William Copley and the further Philip Guston appeared correspondences in her eyes to show.
Jelich puts “confrontational innocence” and humor in her picture objects, one that is based on everyday decorative patterns, such as in carpets and symbols of the Indians refer. Jelich herself described her work as “easy and ironic on serious issues without frivolity “.
Forms of unity and compactness are forms of naive incompetence and produce contrasting tensions. Jelich always thinks about the individual work. In series is a complex of motifs developed and in various media in variations and additions.
A curator described Jelich’s work as “unusual in his totality “, it includes painting, craft objects, natural and artificial materials. Her work is intelligent without being intellectual, narrative without being literary and ironic, without quaint be.
Jelich’s art combines poetry and everyday culture. The variety of her the contradictory and slightly naive nature, Jelich’s reaction to the consumer world, her visions of personal happiness create a special imagination cosmos.
