TRANSPARENCY

“Two components characterize the ouevre of Angelika Jelich creating connections and forming the groups of her work: In one group, nature is depicted in the form of floral or scenic scenarios where in the other group, culture and civilization are captured in the world of traditional symbols and ornaments; urban ideas and cuttings of city views.”

Mrs. Dr. Andrea Brockmann, head of the gallery Münsterland Emsdetten, notes on the occasion of the studio exhibition of Angelika Jelich in the Museum Abbey Liesborn 2009:
“The main emphasis of the works of Angelika Jelich lay on acrylic glass installations, which appear in their transparency more and more penetrated, but nevertheless keep their lightness.
A bright and colorful piece changes with specific reflections. Photos – made unfamiliar and collaged –show hints of her other home New York, the city which has greatly influenced Angelika Jelich`s work. The concreteness is broken by the layers of film, challenging our perception with the help of different color shreds, insertions and blinds.”

URBAN TRANSPARENCY

”The examination of the symbolic language of nature accompanies complementarily Angelika Jelich in her work with a rational perception of urban reality. Her urban impressions avoid any colored palliation, but rather, quote the light language of the metropolis in its neon color. Mostly, the photographs of New York – which are drawn on acrylic glass and wrapped in layers of film – contain this language.
They are the memories of visual impressions, which satisfy the artistic conversion, but not the plain reproduction. In close up view, the panorama and detail assembled in one and the same picture compress themselves into a personality profile of urban experiences.”

VIEW THROUGH THE WINDOWS

Dr. Bennie Priddy to the exhibition Transparenz – Transparency of Angelika Jelich:
“The cosmopolitan city New York is the initial point for the artwork of Angelika Jelich. It is not meant to depict the city in the Lower East Side on a rainy November night but rather a bustling Midtown, when the sun is shining. Photos and drawings above and under transparencies; hung in or in front of boxes of acrylic glass; accented by the transparent colors show the apartment buildings, skyscrapers and the sights in a visually stimulating manner. A series of this artwork is entitled Window.
We are looking through a window at the windows of an opposite building and noticing people in this building while experiencing the silvering of our window- of our point of view -in the opposite windows. […]
Some Windows are abstracted in such a way that we only are able to recognize the blinds of the silvering windows as stripes of colors. The Windows heighten not only the aesthetic effect of the Transparencies but also compliment the urban situation. They make clear that this artwork is not a flyer to go to New York, although the artist is as fond of the vivacious city as I am.[…]“

NATURE TRANSPARENCY

“Natural scenarios are volatilized through the interplay of colours and light – this is further emphasized through the alteration of the art material. The layered transparencies, one upon the other, evoke a three-dimensionality which exposes a sheer deepness to the observer.”
(Wolfgang Türk)
“The vibrant colors and shapes capture the viewers attention on the surface and immerse them in color and lighting atmospheres.”

LETTER CASES OF MEMORY

”In the artwork of Angelika Jelich the resolution and translation of nature into the abstract is precisely outlined into almost naive or ingenuous shapes. Her letter cases of memory in Memorial Summer interpret the floral moments into sharp contours and transition them into a tectonic arrangement. Dissected and beaded, yet approachable, the moments are waiting to reveal once again their hidden and guarded moments of the past. Images of flowers, leaves, the sea and sun evolve into symbols of a happy memory.”
(Wolfgang Türk)

CIRCLES

“In the structuring of the image, the circle is symbolic of the complete world. The resolution of the opposites- to equalize the beginning and the end is represented in the completeness of the circle.
The circle, like an oversized sun, is the central unit which decides the structure and composition of the paintings. As a message, a kind of credo to a harmony, which is, perhaps, only realizable in art. The words in the artwork are reminiscent of the lucky but fleeting moments and experiences, when they are not complete remaining in the dreams.”

SCRATCHED PAINTINGS

„In the Scratched Paintings I find out the material character of the colors. I develop this in the paintings by putting several colors above eachother and by scratching abstract signs and stylized elements of nature in the artwork. Some color is covered and some is shone through. Indian ink and chalk are setting priorities. The scratched paintings somewhat resemble the character of patterns and structure to that of the Gobelin paintings.“

GOBELIN PAINTINGS

“The Gobelin Paintings, a series of large-sized works on canvas, are hanging lackadaisically on the wall-not clamped on blocks. The expression Painting is pointing on the genre. The material is canvas and I am working on it with mixed media.
I am combining spaces and signs in an abstract and reduced figurative manner to create defined compositions.
The category Gobelin Paintings – Signs of nature shows abstract and stylized signs, which are attached to nature. A strong chromaticity shows their character.
The Gobelin Paintings – Abstracts show an explicit balance of the compositions and the harmony of colors.
The Gobelin Paintings – Pattern combine stylized signs in a rhythmical pattern.“

COLOR SPACES AND PIGMENT PAINTINGS

”In the series Color Spaces, I engage in the field of color effect and space. I am working with the clear color in its texture, materiality, impact of the room and its sub-jective effect.
Independent structures get self-dependent significations. You can find a variety of meanings in the overlay of colors as in the series entitled Pigment Paintings. In the Pigment Paintings I utilize the clear pure color in many instances. The original luminance becomes apparent in its whole brilliancy.”

MEMORIES MALLORCA

“In the Memories Mallorca the artist´s photos of Mallorca are changed with color and paint brush by adding, accenting, reducing or covering single parts of the painting, creating individual impressions of nature and the environment. These memories are the impulse and driving force to create new color palettes and therefore lose their original meaning of a souvenir photograph.
Where the motives of the perceived nature do away with its context, the paintings are reduced to the description of the emblematic appearances. Over-designed flowers, in striking colors bursting with natural energy on the clear canvas (page 58) along with simple strokes of the paint brush, imply indicated impressions of nature (page 60).“
